IITA GENEBANK SEED DRYING ROOM.
IITA genebank routinely carryout the best of her seed preservation process by drying the seed to a permissible
moisture of value that prevent the seed from rot in the seed conservation room. The seed drying room is designed
and fitted with de-humidifier equipment that regulate 10 to 15 relative humidity of the room at a controlled
temperature of 17°C and other favorable conditions that helps to reduce the moisture content to a range of 4 to 8% moisture valve.
The drying of the seed aimed at avoiding the growth of micro-organism and germination of stored seed in the long term preservative room.

The IITA Genetic Resources Center (GRC) holds international collections of tropical clonal crops such as cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), yam (Dioscorea species), Banana and plantains (Musa species). These crops hardly produce seeds (very few or no seed production) which are recalcitrant and/or intermediate heterogeneous seed. That’s why they are propagated clonally, through stem cuttings, tubers […]
Exploration is been carried out in GRC based on the availability of seed in the conservation and number of propagated plant available for distribution. Also exploration can be done when there is loss of accession. Important documentation needed when going for exploration are the country of origin, location, longitude and latitude (Geo-reference data) cultivar name, […]
